About Auburn Public Theater
Auburn Public Theater is an intimate, publicly accessible and affordable theater space in downtown Auburn, New York, that challenges and educates our community and fosters creative growth through shared performance experiences.
By providing an excellent performance space for local and visiting artists, Auburn Public Theater will make art a common experience in downtown Auburn and be recognized as a cultural, economic and social asset for the greater Auburn community.
Since its founding in 2005, Auburn Public Theater has welcomed more than 100,000 patrons to experience year-round programming in our multi-venue performing arts and community center. As a hub for theater, art, music, education and creative expression, Auburn Public Theater has brought new life to downtown Auburn through the following key programs:
Through its Producing and Presenting Series, Auburn Public Theater brings national touring acts, live music, musical theater, plays, and comedians to our 200-seat Mainstage for compelling and diverse programming throughout the year.
Auburn Public Cinema is an independent, non-profit, 65-seat art house cinema that engages the community by providing affordable and accessible cinema programming to a diverse range of community members. Auburn Public Cinema seeks to increase film literacy and cinema appreciation through the screening of independent, documentary, foreign, classic and family films in an comfortable, convenient downtown theater with the highest quality digital projection and HD sound.
Auburn Public Theater offers year-round learning opportunities through its educational arm, Auburn Public Studio, an accessible and affordable studio space, offering ongoing, dynamic programs in dance, theater, music and writing for young people ages 3-18 and adults. Auburn Public Studio challenges and educates our community’s children and fosters creative growth for all through shared performance experiences. In fulfillment of its mission to provide affordable educational opportunities to all, the studio offers full and partial scholarships to support performance arts education for children from economically and culturally underserved families throughout Central New York. During our 2013-2014 Season, Auburn Public Studio enrolled 212 youth and 48 adult students and awarded 57 scholarships for classes, workshops, field trips to Broadway and theater camps.
Auburn Public Theater provides a multi-venue community center that serves as a gathering space for a variety of events in any one of our four spaces. Every Tuesday night the organization hosts Open Mic Night, an event which regularly draws a diverse group of over 60 people, from children to the elderly, for an evening of music, spoken word, stand-up comedy and poetry from local and regional talent in a relaxed cafe setting. Auburn Public Theater also curates a Local Artist Exhibit, which opens every First Friday throughout the year. Many local organizations, schools and community groups utilize Auburn Public Theater spaces to conduct meetings or presentations, stage a show, teach a class, screen a film, or throw a party. Auburn Public Theater offers a versatile, affordable venue in the heart of downtown Auburn, New York, for events ranging from a few hours to several days or weeks.
New York State Council On The Arts (NYSCA) selected Auburn Public Theater as a decentralization site for the regranting of funds for the arts in Cayuga, Seneca, Wayne Yates and Ontario Counties. Decentralization support enables emerging artists and organizations to grow professionally and to enhance the cultural climate in communities and neighborhoods where they live and work. Auburn Public Theater established Finger Lakes Community Arts Grants (FLCAG) to administer almost $75,000/year in grants from NYSCA for arts programming by emerging artists and non-profit arts organizations.
